I guess I should say a practical daily.

But what do you need it to do, really ?

It's possible!

I've driven RWD cars in German winters for ten years with two of them being my E90 M3 on roads that don't get plowed. In snow, all you need is good snow tires (NOT all-seasons) and you will have a blast with it. I drive with traction control off cause it's just awesome. I wouldn't hesitate to get a P-car and drive it the exact same way.

Be somewhat comfortable, reliable, and not bankrupt me. Occasionally eat in.

09+ Cayman!

Post-refresh so it'll be reliable!

I have a RWD car right now, I do alright in a. seasons. I was mainly just thinking about clearance or if Porsches handle below zeros temps well.

08's have problems? I figured the year just before a refresh would be pretty solid.

It's probably just as reliable, it's just that I'd rather be on the safe side when it comes to first generation new cars.

With mid engine layout, you have a lot of weight on the driven wheels, so getting stuck in snow is not much of an issue. Only concern is the speed at which the car can spin, and for Caymans in winter, that factor can be quite high, but I would put it as a "user factor" to be considered.

My general advice for Caymans:

1. Get a good one

2. S is always better when it comes to resale and performance, I found the 2.7 a little bit lacking at times.

3. Pre-facelift, post-facelift is mostly a looks/budget question. Both as good and as reliable, providing you start with a good one (look step 1) :-)

4. Enjoy

Get some good snow tires, and commence hooning. I bet a mid-engined car would be an absolute ball to drive in the snow.

There's at least one opponaut that has one, though I can't remember who.

I'd buy a Cayman over a 911 any day.

What about an AWD 911 (CPO)? I honestly have no idea, having only driven a Boxster in ideal spring weather.

Not crazy at all. It's a Porsche: It won't let you down, it won't be bothered by the cold at all. Just mount decent winter/snow tires and keep it well serviced.

You can own something reliable, or you can list 'Porsche ownership' among your list of achievements when it's time for you to leave this planet for good. Pick one.

(Or just lock it away in the winter and DD a craigslist 4x4 Explorer)

I've driven lowered cars in winter months, the icy mounds from the plows are a PITA. I've had to dig a path out of my driveway (like most I'm sure). I have a friend who drives a lowered turbo Cayman year round with no regrets.

Thanks good advice. Any advice on transmission choice?

More than I want to spend. I would like to keep it around $30k, under if I could.

My budget is steadily growing, I need to remind myself I would like a house one day.

If it is between Manual & Tiptronic, I will go with a manual 10 times out of 10.

If it is between Manual & PDK, the decision is a bit more difficult, as the PDK is very, very good. It boils down to your personal preference, but if you always drove manuals, just stick with them before they disappear completely.

When it comes to buying and resale, here is some advice that can save you a few bucks:

1. Bose soundsystem: When it comes to used Porsches, everyone always asks if they have it.

2. SATNav: 2009 onwards are very good, pre2009 look a bit archaic by now, and finding one without is frequently a bargaining chip.

3. If driven daily, heated seats are a nice addition.

4. Sunroof is great, but to be avoided if you are very tall (they limit the headroom by an inch or so)

4. I would not pay much attention to the extras like CD Changer, electric memory seats, Porsche stitched crests, etc. as they make less and less of an difference, as the car ages.

Cheapest Carrera 4 on CarMax here . I suppose there are cheaper - when did the air-cooled cars stop? I've heard those are getting more expensive.

You could probably find a 4 in budget - the only thing is, what would the repair costs be on an older 4 vs. a newer Cayman? I'm guessing the Cayman would be cheaper overall.

Another reason why I prefer the Cayman. A 911 will be right in a different part of my life.

The more I think about it, the more a mid-engined, balanced car makes sense in the snow. Even in an AWD 911, the engine is still hanging out of the back, and there isn't a lot of weight in the front.
